How To Light Your Garden

Outdoor Lighting For Summer Entertaining

With the summer season quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to begin thinking about how you can update and refresh your outdoor space - and get ready for the season of entertaining!

Making small changes or additions to your outdoor lighting can have a big impact on how functional your space can be, and help it remain a usable and relaxing environment long after the natural light begins to fade.

With us all hoping for those long summer nights (without the humidity of last year) spent out on the deck or around the barbeque with friends and family, the key is to create a well lit, welcoming atmosphere that you and your people want to spend hours in. From functional wall lighting to hidden spotlights designed to make an impact, these small details can help you extend your summer nights.

So let's take a look at 5 ways you can create big impact with small changes to your outdoor lighting...

1. Exterior Wall Lights

Exterior wall lights are a key component to creating a safe, secure and well lit environment around your home.

As the natural light fades, wall lights placed around your property - around entryways, doorways and/or walkways around the home - can help you and others move around safely in the dark. Wall lights can also be used to transform your outdoor social areas into a well lit, functional and welcoming space, by providing ample light as the sun goes down, without the need for heavy spot lighting.

Models such as our Hythe Wall Lantern or our Buxton wall light are great if you're looking for more traditional inspired design. Or our Zen and Enzo wall lights are an ideal solution if your home follows a more modern design aesthetic. Or if you're looking for a simple, up and down lighter that suits a variety of home styles, check out our LED Up and Down Exterior Light in Square or Round models.

2. Bollard Lighting

Bollard lighting is a great way to add not just functional lighting, but style to your space too. Having long been associated with more commercial style properties, in recent years there has been huge uptake in leveraging the bollard light to make the exterior of homes brighter and safer.

With so many different shapes, sizes and styles, it's easier than ever to find a bollard light to suit almost any type of home aesthetic. The humble bollard can provide a 360° wash of light, making it a practical and efficient light source for lining driveways or longer walkways around entryways.

Our Cilindro range is a sleek, slimline solution to bollard lighting, ideal for modern homes looking to illuminate pathways. Norvin is a small but mighty solution, great for use on decks and patio's. Or try a more classic bollard look, with the Chicago option.

3. Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is a great way to highlight architectural features, flowerbeds, garden features and more around your outdoor space. This added layer of lighting helps to not just draw attention to those elements you'd like to highlight/show off, but also add depth and dimension to your garden.

Accent lighting can come in many forms, all depending on the feature you're looking to highlight or draw attention too. From small recessed models like our LED IP68 Recessed Lights - great for highlighting focal points such as sculptures, walls or trees from below. To wall mounted fixtures that can downlight feature areas from above, like our Slimline LED Wall Light. Or if you'd rather a more subtle accent lighting choice, you can 'hide' easy to install in-ground spike mount spotlights, like the LED colour spots shown below, in planter or flower beds, so they can only be seen when lights are in use. Additionally, they are also easy to move later on to suit the garden as it grows and becomes more established.

4. Deck Lighting

Recessed deck lighting is a great way to add another layer of lighting to your outdoor space. This style of lighting is great for whether your looking to add an additional layer of safety by target lighting potential dangers like stairs or deck edges, or simply looking to create a more cosy and welcoming atmosphere to social spaces.

Up lighting your deck with something like our deck light kit set is a simple way to bring in additional light, without compromising on space. Plus, as these fittings are recessed, they can go mostly unnoticed during the day, and only draw attention when in use.

5. Smart Lighting

If you are looking to take your outdoor lighting to the next level, Smart Lighting could be the next step in your lighting game. With our smart lighting range and the TUYA app on a mobile device, you can turn lights on and off, schedule, dim and much more all at the click of a button.

Just because it's smart lighting, doesn't mean it has to be complicated to get started either. Simply pair our smart control switch with one of the compatible plug and play lights in the range, and using the TUYA app you can have full control over your garden lighting all in the palm of your hand. Currently we have the Lindon Garden Light, Pipa in-Ground Spotlight and our Deck Lights all compatible with our smart control switch.
